Advertisement promoting Anheuser & Co.’s Buck Beer at Tony Faust's restaurant

April 23, 1876

April 1876 advertisement in the St. Louis Republican by restaurateur Tony Faust promoting Anheuser & Co.’s Buck Beer at his beer garden and restaurant. Faust noted that he was the first purveyor to obtain the beer, which was brewed to celebrate the nation’s centennial. Faust also noted that he would be the first to have the beer on tap at the next centennial celebration with any luck. Faust was a mutual friend of Eberhard Anheuser and Adolphus Busch, which is probably why he was the first purveyor to obtain the Buck Beer. During Anheuser’s lifetime and for a few years after his death, the brewery placed few advertisements in newspapers and the only direct commercial advertisements for Anheuser-Busch beer that appeared in print were the result of Faust’s advertising. “Centennial Buck Beer,” St. Louis Republican, April 23, 1876, p. 10.
