Walter D. Kamphoefner is Professor of History at Texas A&M University, teaching in the field of immigration and ethnicity. His first book was a pioneering transatlantic study: The Westfalians: From Germany to Missouri (Princeton U. Press, 1987), which also appeared in two German editions (1982, 2006). In three decades of scholarly collaboration with Wolfgang Helbich, collecting and editing immigrant letters, he co-edited two book-length anthologies in both German and English versions, and an additional conference volume. He is currently Vice President/ President-Elect of the Society for German-American Studies.
