Koehler, Henry, Sr., n.d.

A first generation immigrant, Henry Koehler, Sr., belonged to the first wave of successful nineteenth-century German-American entrepreneurs in the cities of the Upper Mississippi River Valley. In 1849, upon completing a three-year apprenticeship as a master brewer in Mainz, he immigrated to the United States, where he quickly found work in the American beer industry. He went on to operate successful breweries in Fort Madison, Iowa; St. Louis, Missouri; and Davenport, Iowa.
