Knitting Class at the Henry Street Settlement in New York, 1910

A knitting class at the Henry Street Settlement on New York’s Lower East Side, May 1910. Jacob Schiff funded the non-sectarian Henry Street Settlement, which was founded and run by nurse Lillian Wald, who, like Schiff, was of German-Jewish heritage. The Henry Street Settlement, which is still in operation today, seeks to provide Lower East Side residents with access to health services, housing, educational programs, and job training.
