Stickley, Gustav, Trademark and Motto “Als Ik Kan,” 1901

In 1901, Stickley renamed his company the United Crafts and adopted the medieval joiner’s compass as his trademark. This symbol was accompanied by the Flemish motto, “Als Ik Kan” (which loosely translates to “As well as I can”). The symbol and motto first appeared on the back cover of Stickley’s 1901 publication Chips from the Workshop of Gustav Stickley.
