Guenther, C.H.'s first mill painted by Karl Friedrich Hermann Lungkwitz, 1855

In 1855, Karl Friedrich Hermann Lungkwitz (1813-1891) painted C.H. Guenther's first mill, built in 1851. Lungkwitz was born in Halle-an-der-Saale in the Prussian providence of Saxony. He trained as a painter at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and worked for a time as an artist in that city before immigrating to the United States in 1851. He and his family eventually settled in Fredericksburg, Texas, but Lungkwitz traveled throughout the state, painting homes and landscapes.
