Julius Rosenwald at the Dedication of the Chicago Y, 1912

Description

One of Rosenwald’s first charitable contributions was a $25,000 donation to help build a YMCA for African Americans in Chicago. Later, he offered $25,000 to any city in the country that wanted to build a black YMCA and could raise $75,000 in matching funds. Here, he speaks at the dedication of the Chicago Y in 1912. At the far left of the photograph is Booker T. Washington.
