1897 chromolithographic political cartoon entitled “The Old Guard to the Front.” It appears on the cover of the September 29 edition ofPuck magazine. The cartoon depicts New York political boss Richard Croker as a tiger, the symbol of Democratic political machine Tammany Hall. Crocker is measuring prominent New Yorkers Charles A. Dana, Oswald Ottendorfer, and A. Oakey Hall in order to see if they measure up to Republican Seth Low, the "Citizens Candidate" for mayor in the 1897 election for the first mayor of the unified five boroughs of New York.
