Immigrants arriving at Castle Garden, New York City, 1866. Wood engraving in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, 20 January 1866, vol. 21, p. 280-281. Castle Garden served as the arrival and processing center for immigrants arriving in New York City until the federal government assumed control of immigrant processing from the state of New York and opened the facility at Ellis Island in 1892.
