Social unrest and strikes were the flipside of the unbridled acquisition of wealth and power during the Progressive Era. This photograph depicts the New York City garbage collector's strike in 1911. The contents of a horse-drawn garbage cart have been dumped on the street at 72nd St. & 1st Ave.
