Edward, Rudolph, and Bertram Filene at the Handel’s Institute in Segnitz-am-Main, Bavaria, 1875

Description

In 1875, Clara Filene arranged for her three sons to study at the Handel’s Institute, a private school in Segnitz-am-Main, Bavaria, where she had studied as a girl. In the years since she had left, the school had evolved into an all-male academy known for its rigor and military-style discipline. Edward was miserable there and was relieved when Clara returned after a year to take her sons home.

The photograph shows Rudolph (marked with a 1), Edward (2; in the second row, left of center, above the boy leaning on a drum), and Bertram (3) among their schoolmates.
