Mathilda Griesedieck as Sappho, 1895


Joseph Grisedieck’s wife, Mathilda, portrayed the title role from Sappho as part of a tableaux at the Liederkranz Society Ball in St. Louis in March 1895. Her portrayal of Sappho was warmly received by the audience and received high praise in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which ran this picture of her.
