Jazz - the Classical Music of Globalization

The German Historical Institute and the Austrian Cultural Forum Washington DC are excited to collaborate on this event which will feature a lecture by Reinhold Wagnleitner and a musical performance by jazz musician Tom McDermott.

Performance and Lecture at the GHI

If you’re in DC, please join us on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, from 6 – 8 pm at the German Historical Institute for a lecture and performance of “Jazz – The Classical Music of Globalization.”

The German Historical Institute and the Austrian Cultural Forum Washington DC are excited to collaborate on this event which will feature a lecture by Reinhold Wagnleitner and a musical performance by jazz musician Tom McDermott. Reinhold Wagnleitner is Associate Professor of Modern History at the University of Salzburg, History Lecturer at Salzburg College, and an amateur musician. Tom McDermott is one of New Orleans’ premiere piano players and composers. He grew up in St. Louis, where he earned a Masters’ Degree in Music, wrote music journalism for the morning paper, and soaked up the sounds of ragtime and traditional jazz that flourished in the 1960s and 70s.

The event is part of a citywide celebration of the 75th anniversary of Blue Note Records, a jazz label founded in New York in 1939 by German immigrants Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff. Coordinated by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, in cooperation with the German Historical Institute, the Goethe-Institut, and the Library of Congress.
