On March 20, 1890, J. P. Morgan organized a syndicate for Edison General Electric Company’s initial public offering of stock. As this letter attests, General Edison planned to use a portion of the proceeds to buy technology from Siemens & Halske in Germany. Henry Villard, the author of this letter, was the primary German banker in the Edison transaction
