New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty
The Ellis Island Immigration Station, pictured on this map, opened on January 1, 1892, the same day that Emil Boas began his tenure as general manager of HAPAG in New York. From that point on, newly arrived immigrants had to pass through Ellis Island, which was located slightly north of the Statue of Liberty. HAPAG’s piers were located a bit farther up the Hudson River in Hoboken, New Jersey.
