Heurich Brewery Fire Suppression Equipment Bills

1885

Heurich’s breweries suffered several fires so he purchased fire-fighting equipment. The bill at the bottom is not for explosives, but for a type of fire extinguisher that contained carbon tetrachloride. The grenade was glass and was tossed onto the fire. The glass broke and released the chemical fire suppressant. Use of carbon tetrachloride in fire equipment in the US was banned in the mid twentieth century because when used they could create poisonous phosphine gas.
