Herman Cone’s Account Book
Even after Herman Cone opened his dry goods store in Jonesborough, Tennessee, he and his business partner Jakob Adler continued to travel extensively throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Cone’s account book includes receipts from merchants and suppliers as far north as New York and Philadelphia, and for customers throughout Virginia. This receipt, which dates from October 27, 1860, shows that Cone purchased a variety of items, including hosiery, shoelaces, belts, and even violin strings, from the Philadelphia importers McCauley, Brother & Brewster.
