15-Aug-13

Cover page, a Letter to President Woodrow Wilson on Federal Race Discrimination from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), August 15, 1913. Schiff was an early member of the governing committee of the NAACP, which was founded in 1910. When President Woodrow Wilson initiated the segregation of the federal civil service, Schiff tried to persuade the president, whose presidential campaign he funded, to revoke his policy. Although he was not a signatory to this particular letter to Wilson (which was signed by NAACP president Moorfield Storey, Director of Publicity W.E.B. DuBois, and Chairman of the Board Oswald Garrison Villard), Schiff participated in the organization’s letter-writing campaign of 1913.
