“Local Matters-Beer,” article from a St. Louis newspaper on the growing presence of German beer (June 21, 1857)

The June 1857 newspaper article discusses the growing presence of German beer and beer gardens in St. Louis as a result of increased German settlement in the area.  The author notes the positive influence of beer drinking for the local population as it had largely replaced the consumption of distilled spirits such as whiskey.
