Joe Walzer is a PhD student in the History Department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Joe is currently researching the interactions between German ethnic identity, cultural expression, race, and urban policy in Milwaukee for his dissertation. He presented some of this work related to Milwaukee's beer garden tradition at the 2012 joint meeting of the Organization of American Historians and the National Council on Public History in Milwaukee, and his article, "Gemütlichkeit on the Midway," examining the prevalence of German cultural expression at Milwaukee's turn-of-the-century mass cultural amusement parks, was published in the Summer 2010 edition of Milwaukee County History Magazine.
